Program Overview
The Charlie Barr Foundation, is proud to present the inaugural edition of Sail Quest, its Sailing Scholarship Program. This initiative is designed to impart the fundamental skills of sailing to children, utilising an
“All Hands on Deck” approach.
The kids will learn dinghy sailing out of Port Olimpic, visit the Maritime Museum, go out on an impressive three masted heritage vessel, go to the America’s Cup Experience visitors centre and also have a day with CRAM, a marine conservation agency, to do fun and educational activities about their work such as their projects with sea turtles here on Barcelona’s beaches.
What It Is: The program is designed to provide access to the sport of sailing for children who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to do so. Sailing provides a wonderful opportunity for young people to discover greater confidence, practicality and team spirit in a fun and challenging way. Our goal is to inspire and guide these young enthusiasts as they pursue their dreams and develop their skills, potentially competing in regattas on boats in the Charlie Barr Foundation’s network.
During the week-long program, we will deliver a fun and entertaining talk about the life and adventures of Charlie Barr and introduce them to the America’s Cup.
There will be daily sailing and plenty of other fun activities and educational materials and a quiz.
On their final day, the children will have a morning excursion to visit the America’s Cup Experience in the IMAX at Maremagnum, Port Vell. In the afternoon they will enjoy a sail on the Three-masted schooner, Santa Eulàlia part of The Maritime Museum of Barcelona fleet.
On completion, the parents will be invited to join their children at the graduation as each child receives a signed certificate of completion in the program from Charlie Barr’s great-grandson Alasdair Purves, and Director of the Sail Quest.
